This course presents students with a sampling of translated writing from around the world in the form of the novel, short story, drama or poetry. These texts have travelled beyond the borders of their countries, often gaining new life in other languages and literary traditions. Issues regarding cross-cultural understanding and intertextuality, the practice of translation as a creative and cultural enterprise and literature’s role in history and society will be addressed. Upon completion of the course, students should have acquired the ability to recognize, articulate and write about translated literary texts with attention to its socio-historical context using appropriate literary methods and theory, and how the translation of literature over space and time, culture and language, affects its interpretation and use.
